As we endure these extreme winter weather conditions, many of us are turning to our pantries of canned foods for survival.
I am starkly reminded of our survival in Vietnam eating canned food. These canned foods were called C-Rations. We would carry several cans stacked in a sock that was tied to our web gear. Our supply of food had to be balanced with our supply of bullets and other equipment essential in combat.
More food was good, but was of no value if you were dead. I thoroughly enjoyed cans of pound cake, peaches, and fruit cocktail. As basic and bland as C-Rations were, they were far better than the basic Vietnamese food which was dried fish.
I’ve shared a picture of three of our men on a brief C-Ration break on the battlefield. They are (L-R) Dan Ebbole ( GA.), Steve Iguanta ( FL.) and A.C. Anderson (MO.). Another picture is of me in Rach Kien Village on a Market Day. The dried fish smelled horrible and were covered with pesky flies.
