Comes A Soldier’s Whisper is proud to share Robert Lynn Day’s story in honor of his grandpa:
“This is a picture of my grandpa, James Bell Ratliff on the right and his brother, Johnny on the left Ratliff during WWII in Germany.
I was very young when my grandfather died. He passed away when I was just two years old. He served in WWII under General Patton covering 4 Theaters in Europe and was at the liberation of Buchenwald and other concentration camps. He was so proud to serve under General Patton and had much respect for him. Grandpa brought home two German officer’s swords. They were super nice ones too.
He was medically discharged after a large mortar round exploded near him blowing out an ear drum. I was told of the horrible sights that he witnessed at the camps of children and Jewish prisoner being killed and burned alive as they were trying to climb the fences to get away from the Germans before fleeing from the advancing American soldiers. This haunted him…
My grandma was his second wife and he adopted all four of her children and was a great father to them all.”
